Ottawa is not one single “base.” CAF and DND members can work at different sites across the National Capital Region, and that can completely change the best neighbourhood for your posting. Use the interactive map below as a starting point, then confirm your exact work location with your sponsor or gaining unit.

These are some of the best-known public DND/CAF locations in the Ottawa area. The point is not to guess where you'll work — it's to show why your specific building matters when deciding between Kanata, Stittsville, Barrhaven, Riverside South, Orléans or somewhere closer to downtown.
60 Moodie Drive. A major National Defence headquarters location in Ottawa's west end. For many Carling postings, Kanata, Stittsville, Bells Corners and other west-end communities are natural places to compare. 101 Colonel By Drive. A downtown NDHQ location. A posting here changes the commute conversation considerably compared with Carling — especially if transit access is important to you.
CAF members can also be posted to the Startop Building. DND's Ottawa in-clearance guidance specifically identifies Startop as a separate reporting location, so confirm it before you lock in your neighbourhood shortlist.
For south-end postings, Riverside South and Findlay Creek are two of the first communities worth comparing, with Barrhaven also in the conversation depending on lifestyle, budget and commute tolerance. You can also compare Barrhaven and Stittsville through a CAF relocation lens.
DND maintains facilities in the Uplands area near Ottawa's airport. South Ottawa, Riverside South, Findlay Creek, Barrhaven, Greely and Manotick can all enter the housing conversation depending on your priorities.
CAF and DND organizations are spread across multiple sites in Ottawa and Gatineau. Do not assume “posted to Ottawa” automatically means Carling — get the exact building or worksite before you choose a home.
One of the easiest mistakes to make on an Ottawa posting is falling in love with a house before checking the daily drive. The same home can feel completely different depending on whether you're commuting to Carling, downtown, Leitrim or Uplands.
